There are specific rules about changing your coverage during the year. Generally, you can’t make changes to your benefits until the next Annual Enrollment period. BUT, when you experience a Qualifying Life Event — that is, a specific family or employment status change — you may be allowed to modify your coverage before year-end.
A few examples of Qualifying Life Events are:
- Getting married
- Having a baby
- Transitional Work Arrangement (TWA) changes
- Moving outside the service area of the medical or dental plan in which you’re enrolled
But even if you do have a Qualifying Life Event, you can’t make any and all changes you want. You may make only certain changes that are consistent with the event. Learn more about allowable changes.
NOTE: A doctor or other provider withdrawing from a plan’s network is NOT considered a Qualifying Life Event.
Remember, you can enroll for most VOLUNTARY benefits any time of the year.
You must make any new elections within 60 days of your Qualifying Life Event. Here’s how:
The only thing that can be changed at any time is contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA). You must be enrolled in the BMP-PPO or FMP-PPO, which are High Deductible Health Plans, to be eligible to contribute to an HSA.
